Peyton Watson credits Cleveland’s late, persistent pursuit for him coming to the Cavaliers

The Cleveland Cavaliers were not among the initial teams showing interest in acquiring restricted free agent Peyton Watson. However, once they began their pursuit, the 23-year-old forward recognized the mutual benefits of the situation. Watson acknowledged that while they weren't among the first teams speculated to be interested, they quickly became invested in his services once their pursuit began.

In a late August sign-and-trade deal, Watson joined the Cavaliers. Last season, he played a career-high 40 games for the Denver Nuggets, averaging 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists. Despite his eagerness to settle on a team, Watson admitted that waiting for a resolution during the summer was challenging. The market remained uncertain until late July, when LeBron James signed with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Following James' departure, the Cavaliers intensified their pursuit of Watson, eventually signing him to a four-year, $88 million contract. The Cavaliers aim for Watson to replicate the impact of OG Anunoby with the Toronto Raptors and Jaden McDaniels with the Minnesota Timberwolves. This season, Watson joined a starting lineup featuring Evan Mobley at the other forward position, Jarrett Allen at center, and James Harden and Donovan Mitchell in the backcourt.

Watson believes that playing alongside Mobley and Allen, who excel in attacking the rim, will give him more leeway to be aggressive defensively. He has faith that their strong rim protection, combined with the elite defense from Allen and Evan Mobley, will make the Cavaliers a formidable team both offensively and defensively. Watson, typically considered a 3-and-D specialist, aspires to prove he can excel beyond shooting from beyond the three-point line.
