OpenAI Astra for Law Brings GPT-6 Astra to Legal Research and Workflow Building

OpenAI has unveiled Astra for Law, a legal-focused artificial intelligence foundation built on its GPT-6 Astra model. Currently limited to selected law firms through OpenAI’s Trusted Access Program, Astra for Law aims to streamline legal research, writing, and workflow processes while maintaining strict adherence to professional judgment and client confidentiality.

The product's core is GPT-6 Astra, complemented by a toolkit for specialized legal analysis and writing, including a legal search index covering over 230 million URLs of US case law, statutes, regulations, and court rules. Specialized instructions and legal-grade trust controls are also incorporated. Initially available through ChatGPT and Codex to a select group of firms, Astra for Law will later feature an API for broader access.

Notable to firms handling sensitive client information is OpenAI's commitment to Zero Data Retention for API access. However, the announcement provides limited details on pricing, the broader API launch date, and eligibility for Trusted Access. OpenAI is positioning Astra for Law as a foundation for both direct use and product development, with 26 partner-built plugins connecting ChatGPT to various legal tools.
