Open-weight model developer Arcee AI reaches $1B-plus valuation with new funding

Arcee AI Inc., a developer of open-weight artificial intelligence models, has announced it has raised an undisclosed amount of capital through a new funding round, lifting its company valuation to more than $1 billion. The Series B round was led by Vista Equity Partners, Cambium Capital and Emergence Capital, with participation from A10 Ventures, Hitachi, IAG, Microsoft Corp.'s M12, P7 and AI consultancy Wipro Ltd. The funding round is believed to be worth at least $150 million.

San Francisco-based Arcee AI is working to become one of the top U.S. developers of open-weight models, which release their core numerical parameters publicly, allowing anyone to download, modify and run them on their infrastructure. Co-founder and CEO Mark McQuade believes American companies should have more control over AI systems they use, stating, "Organizations should not have to choose between the capabilities of a frontier model and the ability to control the technology at the center of their work."

Unlike most U.S. AI developers who keep their AI models proprietary, Arcee AI embraces the open-weight concept, developing highly accessible models that match the capabilities of leading systems from companies like OpenAI, Anthropic and Google. McQuade aims for Arcee to catch up with China's leading AI developers, noting that the U.S. has lagged behind in open-source technologies.

Arcee has developed a family of models called Trinity, released within the last year. The most powerful model, Trinity Large, has 400 billion parameters and 13 billion active parameters per token. What sets Arcee apart is its ability to develop these models at a much lower cost than its competitors, spending about $20 million in total for their development. Arcee had only about $30 million available when it started building its models, and almost 70% of its total capital was directed towards creating the Trinity models.
