NRD rolls out new generation MyKad nationwide today

KUALA LUMPUR: Starting today, Malaysian citizens can swap their current identity cards for the upgraded MyKad nationwide. The National Registration Department (NRD) has announced that all 40 branches equipped with printing facilities can provide the new MyKad on the same day for replacements. These branches are scattered across the country, as are Urban Transformation Centres (UTCs). However, NRD branches lacking printing capabilities will deliver the new MyKad within five business days.

Those relying on the Touch 'n Go function will notice a change, as it is no longer accessible on the new MyKad. Instead, users can still utilize the service via the Touch 'n Go eWallet app or via a standalone Touch 'n Go card. It's worth noting that the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) balance and eligibility status on the existing MyKad will remain intact. Sara records can be checked through the Sara system, the Sara portal at www.sara.gov.my, or through official MyKasih channels.

The new MyKad will continue to function for government aid and subsidies that require identity card verification or redemption, provided the individual meets the eligibility criteria set by the relevant agencies. Importantly, the new card will retain the same identity card number and personal details as the previous version, ensuring continuity in official transactions.

The implementation of the new MyKad takes into account the requirements of various systems and services that use the card. Necessary adjustments will be made gradually in cooperation with the relevant parties. The cost for replacing the MyKad depends on the application category and rates established by the NRD. Malaysians do not need to visit the NRD exclusively for this exchange, as replacements can be handled through standard NRD procedures.
