Nostr: Introducing Decentralized Social Communication

Nostr is a decentralized social communication protocol that aims to give users control over their online identity and content. Unlike traditional platforms where a company creates and owns your identity, Nostr users generate their own cryptographic keypair. The public key serves as their identity, while the private key allows them to prove ownership of the identity.

Nostr users can create and move between different Nostr clients without starting from scratch, as their identity and posts are not tied to a single company. This approach is similar to email, where different services can communicate using the same protocol. The protocol was initially developed by a pseudonymous developer named fiatjaf, who built the first client called branle.

In November 2020, Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter, became interested in Nostr and funded the project with 14 BTC. Since then, Nostr has grown beyond its initial developer base and attracted funding from various sources, but the funding has primarily supported other developers building on the protocol, rather than creating a single company-owned social network.
