Ninth woman found dead in South Africa killing spree

Johannesburg, South Africa - Police have recovered the ninth victim in a series of murders in the Kempton Park area, east of Johannesburg, as the nation grapples with a rising tide of gender-based violence. The latest body was discovered on the roadside on Thursday, prompting authorities to impose a lockdown in the Ekurhuleni municipality. Deputy Police Chief Tebello Mosikili stated that the police are investigating whether the latest discovery is connected to previous murders or if it represents a copycat incident.

Over the past two months, nine partially or fully nude bodies have been found, sparking widespread public concern. The Democratic Alliance, South Africa's second-largest political party, has offered a reward of US$31,000 for information leading to the arrest of the killer or killers, while the police have put up a reward of US$25,000.

One of the victims, 38-year-old Elizabeth Moselakgomo, left her eight-year-old daughter at home to go for a jog on September 12, never to return. Her body was discovered behind a hotel on the following day, drawing public attention and igniting a social media campaign to find her. The first victim was a 37-year-old woman found naked and bound with cable ties on July 15. A suspect was apprehended two days later and appeared in court on Wednesday, though authorities could not disclose his nationality.

Police investigators are working to determine if the Thursday discovery is linked to the earlier murders or if it is a result of a copycat killer. The rising number of cases has reignited discussions about the endemic issue of gender-based violence in South Africa, with one in three women experiencing physical or sexual violence during their lifetime, according to the United Nations.
