NHAI to build foot overbridge at Poigai village

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans to construct a ₹1.8-crore foot overbridge (FOB) on the Chennai-Bengaluru Highway (NH 48) in Poigai village to mitigate accidents, particularly those involving pedestrians. The stretch has been identified as one of five accident-prone areas on the busy highway. Steel bridges will be erected to ensure pedestrian safety while crossing.

NHAI officials highlighted that the bridge would aid dairy farmers in reaching veterinary hospitals safely located on the stretch. Additional safety measures like reflectors, blinkers, and speed limit signage will be installed. Vellore Corporation officials confirmed that Poigai village houses a government veterinary hospital, a clinic, and a government industrial training institute, as well as hosting weekly cattle markets.

As per NHAI's plan, the new bridge would feature approximately 20 staircases on either side of the service lane, shelters equipped with lights and CCTV cameras, and fenced sides to prevent accidental falls. Ramps for persons with disabilities and lifts will also be installed. Pedestrians currently traverse the stretch via gaps in the median near bus stops.

NHAI mentioned that vehicular underpasses or foot overbridges on highways should be built every 1.5 km for safe crossings. Such facilities can also be constructed at significant intersections and crowded spots along the highway.
