NASS sends State Police Bill to 36 states for approval

The National Assembly has forwarded the Constitution (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026 to the 36 State Houses of Assembly for review and endorsement. This bill includes provisions for the establishment of state police as part of the ongoing constitutional amendment process. The transmission occurred on September 16, 2026, per Section 9 of the amended 1999 Constitution.

The National Assembly anticipates that state assemblies will review the bill and submit their decisions within 30 days of receipt, though this period is administrative, not constitutional. Approval from at least two-thirds of the 36 state legislatures, representing 24 states, is required before the amendment can advance to the next stage.

Other amendments under consideration encompass local government autonomy, independent candidacies, and increased female representation in legislative bodies. State Houses of Assembly are now set to begin deliberations on the state police bill, following their internal procedures, and will relay their decisions back to the National Assembly. The Assembly pledges to act upon the legislative feedback received.
