More than half of zoom lenses traded in Japan reach 200mm or longer, as third-party manufacturers are left far behind by Canon, Nikon and Sony

In the first half of 2026, a majority of zoom lenses traded in Japan's camera marketplace Minna Camera measured 200mm or longer, according to new figures from the retailer. Out of all zoom-lens transactions, lenses with a focal length of 200mm or greater constituted 51% of the total, just exceeding the 48.8% share of lenses with a shorter maximum focal length.

Minna Camera classifies lenses based on their longest focal length, rather than their 35mm equivalent field of view. This means that a 24-200mm and a 70-200mm lens both fall under the 200mm category. The top 10 traded zoom lenses by focal length at Minna Camera during the first half of 2026 were led by the Nikon Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S, which came in first place. The now-discontinued lens is highly praised for its sharpness and is available for purchase ranging from $1,739.95 (used) to £2,379 (new).

The Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM, a super-telephoto zoom designed for EOS R mirrorless cameras, ranked eighth among the top 10 traded zoom lenses in the same period. The Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM SMG, a lens designed for the Sony E mount, held the ninth position. Canon emerged as the leading brand among the five manufacturers for which Minna Camera provided brand figures, accounting for 38.1% of zoom-lens transactions.

Nikon followed closely behind with 27.2%, while Sony held the third position at 16.6%. Sigma and Tamron rounded out the list with 4.1% and 3.4% market shares, respectively.

When analyzing the proportion of each brand's zoom transactions that reached 200mm or longer, the rankings differed slightly. Tamron topped the list with a 65.6% share, narrowly outpacing Canon's 64.2%. Nikon held the third position with a 49.7% share, followed by Sony at 39.7% and Sigma at 37.8%.
