MOL Opens New Solar and Battery Storage Project in Hungary

Hungarian energy conglomerate MOL Group has officially opened a new solar park and battery storage complex at its Algy? site, broadening the company's renewable energy offerings in Central Europe. The facility merges a 37.4-MWp solar park with a 20-MW/40-MWh energy storage system, enabling MOL to store excess renewable energy and mitigate power generation variability.

Combined with MOL's existing generation assets at Algy?, the solar park can meet the site's entire electricity needs. By cutting CO2 emissions by approximately 13,000 tonnes annually, the project also diminishes MOL's dependence on external electricity purchases. The solar park is projected to produce enough power to satisfy the yearly consumption of approximately 22,500 households.

MOL Group's Chief Strategic Officer, György Bacsa, highlighted the benefits of leveraging green electricity to lessen reliance on external energy sources and enhance grid stability through the storage system. The solar facility was developed by Hungarian firm ALTEO Plc, where MOL and its partners possess a 73.8% ownership stake.

Currently, MOL runs nine solar parks in Hungary with a collective capacity of 405 MW, alongside two battery storage installations totaling 80 MWh. The company aims to significantly enlarge its Hungarian battery storage capacity to 500 MWh by 2030. MOL's photovoltaic portfolio across Central Europe has now reached 415 MWp, resulting in an estimated annual CO2 reduction of 160,000 tonnes.
