Micron to scale up India chip assembly multifold

Currently, Micron's production capacity at Sanand exceeds the memory required for India's entire laptop market, Mehrotra stated. This year, the company plans to assemble and test tens of millions of chips at Sanand, with hundreds of billions of chips expected next year. Micron designs memory chips in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, assembles them in Gujarat, and ships them to customers worldwide, Mehrotra added.
The company's engineering in India dates back long before the factory construction, with India's teams now a core part of Micron's global technology network and contributing to over 3,700 patents, inventions, and disclosures.
The expansion in Sanand comes as demand for memory chips surges due to the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), with Micron recording a staggering 1,400 percent growth in its business. Mehrotra attributed this growth to AI's foundational role, emphasizing that AI begins with data and requires memory and storage for models to scale and generate answers.
He noted that as models grow larger, the demand for memory increases exponentially, and Micron is well-positioned to build faster, denser, and more power-efficient memory to meet these growing demands.
