Micron Sanand Plant To Scale Chip Output To 'Hundreds Of Millions' By 2027, Says CEO Sanjay Mehrotra

Micron Technology is set to expand its semiconductor assembly and testing facility in Sanand, Gujarat, to a level capable of processing hundreds of millions of chips by 2027, according to CEO Sanjay Mehrotra. Speaking at SEMICON India 2026 in New Delhi, Mehrotra highlighted the progress India has made in moving from discussions about semiconductor potential to actual manufacturing activity.

He noted that Micron's finished DRAM and NAND products, now bearing the "Made in India" label, are being shipped to customers worldwide. The Sanand plant currently produces more than the memory required by India's laptop market and has a production capacity already surpassing the memory needs for the country. The facility, which began commercial operations earlier this year, focuses on assembling and testing semiconductors rather than wafer fabrication.

It receives advanced DRAM and NAND wafers from Micron's global network and converts them into finished memory and storage products. With an investment of around $2.75 billion from Micron and government partners, the first phase of the project will include over 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space. The expansion of Micron's operations in India is driven by the growing demand for memory and storage due to artificial intelligence applications.

Mehrotra also mentioned that Micron has been operating in India for seven years, employing over 7,000 people directly and supporting thousands more through its ecosystem, and carries out chip design work in Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
