macOS 27: What’s new for the Photos app?

macOS 27 Golden Gate introduces a host of enhancements to the Photos app, though it does not undergo a dramatic redesign. Instead, it gains a broad array of improvements ranging from Apple Intelligence-powered editing, new organization methods, better sharing tools, and more. The most notable updates are found in a new Tools pane, which requires Apple Intelligence on a compatible Mac.

Clean Up, a feature within the Tools pane, receives a significant quality boost, now capable of handling larger objects and more complex scenes with more realistic results. A fast mode is designed for addressing small blemishes, while high quality mode tackles intricate edits previously unachievable. Extend, a new tool within the Tools pane, leverages generative models to extend an image beyond its original edges, aiding in scenarios like straightening horizons or adjusting aspect ratios.

Extend can also be accessed directly from the Crop tool. Photos now supports full-resolution sharing and all common photo and video formats in iCloud Shared Albums, making them more inclusive by allowing friends using Android or Windows devices to join and contribute their own photos via iCloud.com. Users can now save all photos from a Shared Album to their personal library with a single click.

Additionally, shared albums can be set to expire after 30 days for those that do not need to persist indefinitely. The app also offers more control over slideshows, enabling users to select any combination of photos and videos, customize slide duration, transition style, and music, and save the finished slideshow as a video file within their photo library.

Moreover, the Captured by Me collection has been reinstated, gathering photos taken with the Camera app, including those from previous devices. This collection can be used as a filter in other parts of the library. Furthermore, photographers can now rate their photos on a one-to-five-star scale, which can be employed to filter the main library and collections.

It is worth noting that star ratings are disabled by default and must be enabled in Photos app settings. Two lesser-known changes include the ability to prioritize iCloud Photos syncing to ensure new photos and videos begin uploading more swiftly, and the rebuilding of the search foundation utilized by Spotlight, Photos, and Mail.

Apple claims this new system creates a more comprehensive index of content and maintains it updated throughout the day, which is expected to be beneficial.
