Lofty Drews reunites with iconic Datsun 50 years after 1973 Safari triumph

A memorable sight unfolded recently when Lofty Drews, the legendary 1973 Safari Rally navigator, was reunited with the Datsun he raced for over the years. It was a testament to the rich history of Kenyan rallying, as this meeting brought together drivers, cars, and stories that helped shape the sport's legacy. Born in Tanga, Tanzania, Drews became a star in the World Rally Championship when he guided Shekhar Mehta to victory at the 1973 Safari Rally – his first win in the prestigious competition.

His success continued with notable collaborations, including stints alongside Sandro Munari and Rauno Aaltonen, and he finished on the podium at the Safari Rally seven more times. Drews remained a regular presence at the Safari Rally until 1990 and later represented East Africa at the Safari Classic Rally. In the 1990s, he moved to Australia and competed in the Australian Rally Championship before finding peace on a farm in Queensland.
