King warns AI leaders of ‘existential dangers’ if tech falls into wrong hands

King Charles will address leaders from some of the world's most influential AI companies at a summit in Scotland on Thursday, urging them to ensure humanity "does not lose control of our destiny". The event, hosted by the King at Dumfries House in Ayrshire, will bring together executives from Nvidia, OpenAI, Anthropic and Google Deepmind to discuss potential common principles for AI development.

Attendees are expected to debate whether a united approach can be taken to implement safeguards for the rapidly advancing technology. While Elon Musk, who has previously advocated for greater oversight, will not participate, his backing for calls for tighter regulation will still be part of the talks. The summit follows a series of warnings from top AI executives, including Anthropic's CEO Dario Amodei and former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, who have called for the industry to slow its pace and take safety measures more seriously.

The debate has highlighted a divide within the AI community, with some advocating for a voluntary slowdown and others arguing for companies to decide when their technologies are safe to release. UK AI minister Kanishka Narayan and delegates from China are also set to attend the summit.
