King Charles cautioned AI industry leaders on Thursday about the "existential dangers" posed by the technology falling into the wrong hands, emphasizing the need for safeguards before it is too late. The monarch was meeting with the co-founders of chipmaker Nvidia and the Google DeepMind AI research laboratory, as well as leaders from AI providers OpenAI and Anthropic, in Scotland.

Concerns are mounting that safety measures are not keeping up with the rapid advancement of increasingly powerful systems. Recent weeks have seen a heated debate over whether the industry can self-regulate, with input from influential figures such as Pope Leo, Charles, and U.S. President Donald Trump. The king stressed that AI holds the potential to enhance and save lives, particularly in life sciences and medicine.

However, its creators have increasingly warned about its potential to develop darker capacities, possibly even to take lives. Charles expressed a sense of urgency in adequately considering the "existential dangers" of such technologies falling into the wrong hands.
