Kenyans seeking jobs abroad urged to verify offers

NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenyans pursuing employment opportunities abroad are being advised by an Employment and Labour Relations Court Judge to verify job offers and contracts with government authorities before leaving for their destinations. Judge Nzioki wa Makau warns that failure to do so puts migrant workers at risk of receiving assignments that deviate from the roles they initially applied for.

Speaking in an interview, the judge emphasized the existence of mechanisms provided by the National Employment Authority and the Ministry of Labour for prospective migrant workers to confirm the authenticity of advertised positions. According to Judge Makau, while the court system may seem strict, it is also composed of ordinary people who understand the challenges faced by the citizens.

He stressed the importance of proper documentation, such as a work order from the destination country, that clearly outlines the nature of work and the number of workers needed. Judge Makau cautioned against bypassing government verification when seeking overseas employment to expedite the process, as it could lead to complications upon arrival.

He advised that in case of problems abroad, workers might require assistance from government bodies or relatives, making it crucial to disclose all pertinent employment and travel details beforehand. The judge believes that thorough verification can help avert disputes related to recruitment, employment terms, and the type of work provided to migrant workers.
