iPadOS 27.2 adds convenient new feature from the Mac

iPadOS 27.2, the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system, has been released in beta form. This update brings with it a redesigned Health app, in addition to a feature borrowed from the Mac: a Siri popup that appears when text is selected. This addition is part of Apple's overall strategy to integrate its AI-powered assistant, Siri, across all its platforms, including iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and their respective companion systems.

On the iPad, users can access Siri in various ways, such as through a voice prompt ("Siri" or "Hey Siri"), a pull-down from the top of the screen, the new Siri option in the edit menu, opening the new Siri app, or by using the CMD + Space shortcut to open Spotlight and query Siri directly. However, iPadOS 27.2 introduces a new method of invoking Siri that is directly copied from the Mac.

In macOS 27 Golden Gate, selecting text brings up a small Siri icon in the top-left corner of the selection. Hovering over this icon reveals an 'Ask Siri' text box, allowing users to interact with Siri without leaving the selected text. This functionality was not available in iPadOS 27, but with iPadOS 27.2 and a connected trackpad, users can now enjoy this seamless experience.

While the new Siri popup works with a trackpad attached to the iPad, users without a trackpad can still access Siri by selecting the text and tapping the 'Ask Siri' option that appears in the full edit menu. This feature, which has been prevalent in macOS for some time, is a welcome addition to iPadOS, enhancing the productivity of everyday interactions. The integration of such a recent Mac feature into iPadOS highlights Apple's focus on cross-platform consistency and enhanced user experience.
