ICE officer charged in non-fatal shooting arrested by Minnesota authorities

Minneapolis authorities arrested Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer Christian Castro on Wednesday evening in connection with an outstanding warrant. Castro faces charges of assault and false reporting of a crime. The arrest occurred in downtown Minneapolis. Castro is also set to appear in a federal court on separate charges, including making false statements to investigators about an incident in January.

According to prosecutors, Castro shot and wounded Venezuelan man Julio Ceasar Sosa-Celis during a federal immigration operation known as Operation Metro Surge. He claimed he had been attacked with a broom and shovel, but the victim's family alleges Castro shot the man in the leg while firing through a front door. Minnesota authorities have been at odds with the Trump administration over jurisdiction for Castro's prosecution.

The Department of Homeland Security claimed Minnesota's actions were a "political stunt," maintaining that only federal authorities could handle the case. Castro is set to appear in a state court on Thursday and in a federal court on Friday.
