Heavy rains: Government steps up preparedness

The Kenyan government has intensified preparations for the upcoming rainy season, beginning in October 2026 and extending into January 2027, as El Niño conditions are predicted to exacerbate the situation. Eighteen counties have been placed under a red alert due to the anticipated heavy rains. Government spokesperson Charles Owino has urged Kenyans to remain watchful and take proactive steps to safeguard lives, property, and livelihoods.

Speaking to the media, Owino detailed the measures being put in place to minimize the impact of heavy rainfall. He highlighted the strengthening of multi-agency preparedness and response networks, risk assessments of vulnerable and flood-prone areas, and enhancements to early warning communication systems. The government is particularly vigilant about the potential for flooding, landslides, disruption of essential services, infrastructure damage, and displacement of vulnerable households.

Owino assured the public that the Kenya Meteorological Department will continue monitoring weather conditions and providing forecasts and advisories to support preparedness and response efforts at both national and county levels. Those living in flood-prone areas, along rivers, and other high-risk locations have been encouraged to take early precautionary actions, such as voluntarily relocating to safer areas.

The public is advised to avoid crossing flooded rivers, roads, and bridges; refrain from walking or driving through moving floodwater; stay away from riverbanks, drainage channels, and other flood-prone areas; keep children away from flooded zones and water bodies; secure important documents, household belongings, and livestock; and follow evacuation instructions provided by authorized government agencies.
