Google-Pakistan deal raises data privacy concerns

ISLAMABAD: Freedom Network, a media watchdog, has raised concerns over Google's recent partnership with the Pakistani government, questioning the safeguards in place to protect citizens' digital privacy. The watchdog welcomed the signing of memoranda of understanding and agreements between Google and the government, following the company's establishment of its office in Pakistan, but expressed apprehension about the lack of transparency surrounding the agreements.

Freedom Network questioned the public disclosure of all Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), agreements, contracts, or other arrangements signed between Google and the government, and demanded answers regarding undisclosed commitments concerning user data, content, metadata, or government databases. They specifically sought details of any protections or safeguards against government access to journalists' Gmail, Google Drive, photos, YouTube accounts, search-related information, or other data that could potentially reveal confidential sources.

Freedom Network emphasized the importance of transparent legal standards for requests by government agencies and the right to challenge decisions. They also inquired about the storage location of Pakistani citizens' data, as the country is developing a national data-governance framework that prioritizes data sovereignty, minimum disclosure, and the right to know who has accessed their information.

Freedom Network questioned whether Pakistani users' data would be stored in Pakistan, overseas, or both, and emphasized the need for independent audits of Google's compliance with privacy and human rights safeguards in Pakistan, rather than relying solely on the government.
