From dust to bloom: German artist explores nature’s transformation in Dubai

Dubai: A debut solo exhibition by German artist Stephan Kaluza titled "From Dust to Bloom" opened in Dubai on Thursday, showcasing a series of large-scale oil paintings that explore the transformation of nature through human intervention. The exhibition, running until October 31 at JD Malat Gallery Dubai, is the artist's first solo show in the UAE.

Kaluza's works, which draw from photorealism and abstraction, delve into the changing relationship between the natural world and human activity. Through shifts in color, composition, and form, the paintings invite viewers to question the boundaries between observed landscapes and imagined ones.

Dubai serves as a particularly relevant setting for the exhibition, as the city itself embodies the exhibition's title, representing a modern metropolis that emerged from the barren desert. Kaluza notes that "Dubai is practically predestined as a location for this exhibition because the city itself is the ultimate manifestation of the title From Dust to Bloom, a highly modern, blooming metropolis that was literally wrestled from the desert dust."

The exhibition's title reflects Kaluza's fascination with the cycles of destruction, decomposition, regeneration, and renewal. Using terms like "dust" to represent the past and "bloom" to symbolize life and renewal, the artist's paintings move beyond straightforward depictions of landscapes and instead focus on the central theme of transformation.

The exhibition occupies a space between recognisable landscapes and abstraction, creating a visual tension that encourages viewers to reconsider familiar natural environments and the forces that shape them. Jean-David Malat, founder of JD Malat Gallery, expressed delight at presenting Kaluza's work in Dubai, highlighting the tension between precision and ambiguity in the artist's oil-on-canvas paintings and his exploration of nature's continual transformation through human intervention. The Dubai exhibition will be on view from September 17 to October 31, 2026.
