France can provide defense aid to Ukraine but should scale back financial support, Le Pen says

On September 16, the co-leader of France's National Rally party, Marine Le Pen, stated that France cannot continue supporting Ukraine at its current level due to its own financial constraints. While France remains committed to training Ukrainian soldiers, providing equipment, and defending their country, Le Pen emphasized that the nation cannot continue the same level of financial aid given its substantial previous contributions.

This perspective comes on the heels of surveys showing Le Pen leading in polls ahead of the upcoming French presidential election, which is less than a year away. Her stance aligns with that of her party's co-leader, Jordan Bardella, who previously stated that France should not abandon Ukraine entirely but cannot indefinitely finance the war-torn country without any guarantees.

Le Pen's comments reflect the broader debate among French parties regarding the level of support for Ukraine amid Russia's ongoing full-scale war. France has been a key ally of Ukraine, spearheading pro-Ukrainian initiatives and providing military support, intelligence, and other resources. However, France's support relative to its economic strength is comparatively lower than that of other countries such as Germany, the Nordic nations, or the Baltic states.

The Kiel Institute's Ukraine Support Tracker reveals that France's contributions amount to less than 1% of its GDP, while countries like Denmark, Estonia, and Lithuania have contributed over 3%. Despite Le Pen's previous pro-Russian stance and her party's past financial ties to Russia, she has since distanced herself from those views.

Nonetheless, Le Pen's opposition to more decisive support for Ukraine, such as deploying French peacekeepers on the ground, highlights the complex position of France in the ongoing conflict.
