Ex-President Yoon indicted over wife's luxury bag case

Former President Yoon Suk Yeol has been indicted on anti-graft charges related to his wife's alleged acceptance of a luxury Dior bag worth 3 million won ($2,170) in 2022, prosecutors announced on Thursday. This indictment adds to the growing list of legal troubles faced by the imprisoned former head of state, who is currently serving multiple trials following his failed 2024 attempt to implement martial law and subsequent removal from office.

Yoon allegedly failed to report the receipt of the Dior bag from a pastor to the anti-graft authorities, according to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office. Surprisingly, prosecutors had previously decided not to pursue charges against Yoon in connection with this case in October 2024, as they believed it was not directly related to his official duties at the time.

The recent indictment comes after a Seoul district court convicted Yoon's wife, Kim Keon Hee, on charges of accepting the luxury bag along with other valuable items in exchange for favors in June. This case is currently under review at an appellate court. In a related development, prosecutors chose not to indict Yoon on charges of violating election law.
