Ex-Lagos LG chairman, aspirant defend APC exit, secure APM assembly tickets

Former Agege Local Government Chairman Ganiyu Egunjobi and former aspirant Azeez Yusuf have denied reports linking their defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to Speaker Mudasiru Obasa. The two announced their switch to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in a joint statement to PUNCH Online. They contested the APC tickets for Agege Constituencies I and II, but lost the primaries to Glenga Abiola and Sakiru Enimakure, respectively.

Despite their initial loss, Egunjobi and Yusuf insisted that their decision to join APM was not influenced by Obasa. They claimed the decision was taken independently after careful consideration of their experiences in the party. The duo acknowledged that defections are common in Nigerian politics, citing former Minister of State for Defence Musiliu Obanikoro as an example.

They expressed disappointment with the APC leadership for failing to initiate reconciliation efforts following the contested primaries, stating that their defection was a direct consequence of the denial of their mandates.
