EU May Restrict Visa Issuance To Russians And Ban Entry For Ex-Combatants — Kallas

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas has suggested that the European Union may restrict visa issuance for Russians and ban entry for former combatants, according to UATV English. Speaking during a plenary session in Strasbourg, Kallas pointed out that EU sanctions have already cost the Russian economy one trillion euros.

The EU is currently working on the largest sanctions list against Russia in history, and naval operations are playing a key role in inspecting suspicious vessels. Kallas also highlighted efforts to reduce Russia's diplomatic presence in Europe and tighten requirements for intra-Schengen travel. Member states have made their own moves, such as Hungary expelling 10 Russian diplomats, with potential for further actions.

Kallas emphasized the possibility of taking additional measures, including monitoring the movement of Russian diplomats within the Schengen area, banning visas for former Russian combatants, and reconsidering the issuance of tourist visas to Russian citizens. She stressed the need to narrow the circle of individuals responsible for attacks on European territory.

The recent incident of a drone violating Lithuanian airspace and being shot down by NATO fighter jets was noted, with the UAV reportedly originating from the direction of Belarus.
