South Africa has rebuked new United States visa restrictions, alleging the measures target its white minority unfairly. The U.S. restrictions, announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday, have rekindled tensions between the two nations following months of relative peace. The U.S. has been contentious with Pretoria since President Donald Trump alleged white South Africans faced systemic persecution, despite statistics showing white South Africans generally possess higher income levels and employment rates compared to Black South Africans.

The U.S. restrictions are purportedly designed to combat racial injustice stemming from apartheid-era laws. However, South Africa's foreign ministry dismissed the claims, stating the announcement mirrored "mischaracterisation" of the country's domestic policies. The ministry emphasized South Africa's right to enact legislation addressing its historical racial inequalities and called for continued diplomatic dialogue.

The specifics of who would be affected by the new visa restrictions remain unclear. The U.S. stated the measures would target foreign nationals responsible for or involved in laws and policies fostering race-based discrimination, without naming any individuals. South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola is currently in the U.S. to attend the U.N.

General Assembly in New York, according to a ministry official. The U.S. Ambassador to South Africa warned that the visa restrictions are "only the first step in a series of escalatory measures," asserting that the "time for endless 'dialogue' has run its course." The consequences, he added, would consequently be severe. The Trump administration had already barred South Africa from attending the G20 summit in December, despite the nation's founding membership in the group.
