Drug trafficking: Mahama moves to tighten port security after recent cases

President John Dramani Mahama has taken steps to enhance security measures at Ghana's ports in an effort to curb drug trafficking, according to a report from September 17, 2026. The President convened an urgent meeting with security chiefs to address recent cases of narcotics being smuggled out of the country. During the meeting, it was revealed that 10 individuals, including four Customs Division officers from the Ghana Revenue Authority, are currently under investigation for their alleged involvement in drug trafficking.

The President emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to strengthening border controls and preventing narcotics trafficking. Consequently, he directed the formation of an inter-agency task force to develop a detailed roadmap outlining measures to bolster the country's border security. The task force was given two weeks to present its recommendations based on the outcomes of the meeting.

The President's directive aims to improve Ghana's systems for detecting and preventing the movement of narcotics through the country's ports and other borders.
