Dr Akwasi Opong-Fosu declares intention to contest NDC National Chairmanship

Former Local Government Minister Akwasi Oppong-Fosu has entered the National Democratic Congress (NDC) race for National Chairman ahead of the party’s December 13 elections. In his bid to lead the party, Oppong-Fosu emphasizes the importance of reviving the NDC’s foundational values of probity, accountability, and social justice.

He urges members to move beyond comparing themselves with the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and instead focus on strengthening internal structures, reconnecting with grassroots members, and advancing a clear vision for the future.

Oppong-Fosu’s vision for the NDC is grounded in "restoration, renewal, and reset," which he believes should guide the party’s efforts to enhance its organization and reestablish ties with its members. He defines restoration as returning to the party’s core principles of probity, accountability, and social justice—concepts that should permeate all aspects of the NDC’s operations, rather than serving as mere slogans.

Inclusive governance is a key concern for Oppong-Fosu, who stresses the necessity of carrying all party members along as the party progresses. He argues that inclusiveness is crucial for the NDC’s success, advocating for the party to ensure that no section of the membership feels left behind. "Justice must begin within our own political party. It must begin with how we treat one another and how we organize, lead and recognize service within our ranks," he asserts.
