Diesel could hit GH¢28 without govt’s intervention – NPA CEO

Diesel prices at fuel stations could potentially reach GH¢28 per litre without government assistance, according to the National Petroleum Authority's CEO, Godwin Edudzi Tameklo. The CEO revealed that the national body had steered clear of a full cost transfer to consumers by intervening in the market. Tameklo explained that the sharp surge in global diesel prices since February 2026 had put significant pressure on the domestic fuel market, necessitating government support to prevent consumers from bearing the full brunt of the soaring costs.

He highlighted that international diesel prices had nearly doubled, escalating from around US$794 per tonne at the start of the year to US$1,519 per tonne, which would have driven domestic prices to as high as GH¢28 per litre without intervention. The government has committed almost GH¢1 billion in interventions to cushion consumers from these rising fuel costs, effectively providing about GH¢20 in support for every 10 litres of diesel purchased.

Tameklo emphasized that without government intervention, diesel would have become significantly more expensive for motorists, with wider economic repercussions, particularly impacting transportation and the pricing of goods and services. The government's intervention aimed to shield consumers from the immediate consequences of the global petroleum price surge.
