Deputy Speaker concerned about repeated Ad Hoc Committee extensions

Dr Annelie Lotriet, the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, expresses concern over the repeated requests for extensions of the Ad Hoc Committee tasked with investigating security-related allegations. This committee is currently probing claims of criminal infiltration, corruption, and political interference within the justice system. Recently, National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza granted the committee a sixth extension, set to conclude on October 30th.

While extensions are not uncommon for committees, Lotriet argues that the current situation cannot continue indefinitely. She recalls her own involvement in the ad hoc committee for Section 25 and the Impeachment Committee of the Public Protector, where extensions were granted, but always with valid reasons. Lotriet insists that there must be a point at which the committee's investigation draws to a close, as continued extensions without a solid rationale do not contribute to the desired outcome.

Furthermore, National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza emphasizes the urgent need to enhance security within the Parliamentary precinct. This follows the apprehension of a 30-year-old male who unlawfully entered the premises, posing a potential threat to the security of the entire institution. The recent development underscores the pressing security concerns plaguing the Parliament buildings, which had already undergone extensive reconstruction following a devastating fire in 2022.

Didiza acknowledges that the security situation has become even more critical following the latest incident. She highlights the longstanding need for improved security and expresses her belief that the SAPS (South African Police Service) plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of Parliament. She also points out that a recent trespassing incident further emphasizes the importance of bolstering security measures within the precinct.
