Croc-habitat gets green light for 2032 Olympic rowing

After a thorough and robust assessment, the Fitzroy River in Rockhampton, home to crocodiles, has been approved as the venue for rowing and canoeing events in the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. Located around 600 kilometers (372 miles) north of Brisbane, the river has been a controversial choice due to its saltwater crocodile habitat and technical specifications.

However, the main concerns were centered around the venue's fairness, as the river is prone to flooding and has strong currents that can create uneven competition conditions. Additionally, there were issues with the lack of accommodation options for rowers and spectators. Despite these concerns, an independent assessment declared the river fit for purpose, and it was endorsed by World Rowing and Paddle Worldwide (formerly International Canoe Federation), along with Olympic organizers.

World Rowing President Jean-Christophe Rolland emphasized the importance of ensuring fair and equal conditions for athletes in requesting a rigorous assessment. Thomas Konietzko, President of Paddle Worldwide, expressed enthusiasm about the high level of technical work undertaken, which provided confidence that the course can deliver fair competition.

While the threat from crocodiles was not directly addressed in the assessment, officials have assured that processes will be in place for reporting sightings. Brisbane 2032 President Andrew Liveris downplayed the issue, comparing it to the presence of sharks in the ocean, stating that it is a "can do, not a can't do" mindset. The endorsement provides additional certainty for the next phase of venue planning and Games delivery, with all future design and operational work focusing on Rockhampton.
