Constitution Review: Speakers yet to get formal transmission of bills — Conference Chairman

Dennis Guwor, Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, has announced that the body is prepared to collaborate with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and the National Assembly leadership regarding the transmission of Constitution Review resolutions. Acting on the National Assembly's announcement that the Sixth Alteration Bill, including the State Police Bill, has been forwarded to State Assemblies, Guwor confirmed that State Assemblies are still awaiting the official copies.

In a press release by his Chief Press Secretary, Nkem Nwaeke, Guwor emphasized that the State Assemblies will engage with the NGF leadership after receiving the formal documents, with a particular focus on the State Policing Bill due to its impact on sub-national governance. As the Speaker of the Delta State Assembly, Guwor, who is also the Conference Chairman, indicated that the Conference will conduct a comprehensive legislative review of the bills upon receipt.

He also highlighted the necessity of engaging NGF leadership to align viewpoints on the State Policing framework, considering the constitutional mandates of Governors and State Legislatures in the reform process. Guwor assured that the Conference will keep all Speakers informed of developments and will relay State Assembly resolutions to the National Assembly in accordance with Section 9 of the amended 1999 Constitution.
