China may not block U.S.-N.K. diplomacy, but unlikely to play central role: ex-U.S. diplomat

Washington, Sept. 17 (Yonhap) -- Former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and Pacific Affairs Daniel Kritenbrink suggests China is unlikely to assume a central role in U.S.-North Korea diplomatic efforts, despite the resumption of talks. Kritenbrink, now a strategist at The Asia Group, stated that Beijing will likely be suspicious of a significant thaw in Washington-Pyongyang relations, making it unlikely for China to play a central role in the diplomatic process.

He expressed doubt about whether North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has any genuine interest in engaging in diplomacy, citing his past support from Russia and China. Kritenbrink noted that while both U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to discuss North Korea during their upcoming summit, he remains skeptical about substantial agreement being reached.
