China imposes travel curbs to protect ‘national security’ amid superpower tech race

China implemented stringent travel limitations on its residents on Tuesday, targeting individuals deemed to jeopardize the nation's "industrial or technological security," according to an official statement from the State Council. Those who breach technology import and export regulations may face bans on leaving the country. Furthermore, individuals involved in illicit activities abroad could be prohibited from departing China for a term ranging from six months to three years following their return.

The measures, introduced in July but enforced from Tuesday, are aimed at "defending national sovereignty, security, and development interests," the State Council asserted. However, experts stress that the travel restrictions provide China with a "broad scope." Security and criminal activities may prove to be ambiguous and easily modifiable, according to Chong Ja Ian from the National University of Singapore.

The true implications of the remit will only become apparent once there are instances of its application, he added. Chong cited the recent case of US citizen Min Zin, detained in Yunnan province on June 3, as evidence of the wide range of individuals China could restrict from exiting the country. China refuted the allegations in August, claiming Min Zin was suspected of breaching Chinese law.

The travel limitations, according to Dylan Loh, an associate professor at Singapore's Nanyang Technological University, signal China's commitment to preventing "leaks in security or national interest-sensitive areas."
