Cash-strapped Hyogo gov receives massive 830-million-yen gold bar windfall

In Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, a generous anonymous donor has contributed 35 kilograms of pure gold ingots, valued at approximately $5.4 million, to the prefectural government. This is the largest single donation in the prefecture's history. The government plans to sell the gold and utilize the funds for regional development projects, as per the donor's wishes.

The anonymous individual approached the prefectural officials about making the donation around February. Following several discussions, the gold ingots were delivered to the government on September 8, under strict security measures. Hyogo Prefecture Governor Motohiko Saito announced the donation at a regular news conference on September 16, expressing gratitude on behalf of the people of Hyogo.

In August, Hyogo Prefecture was designated as a government entity that requires approval before issuing new bonds due to its substantial debt levels and rising interest rates. The prefecture is projected to maintain significant annual budget deficits, potentially leading to a classification as a local government in need of financial rehabilitation by fiscal 2031. This would signify a status just short of collapse.
