Carney welcomes EU’s ‘associate member’ plan, while Trump lashes out

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed the European Parliament on Thursday, emphasizing the shared security and economic interests between Canada and the European Union. Carney praised European culture and values, such as democracy, freedom, and human rights, which he stated Canada also cherishes. The Canadian leader reiterated that his country is not a fair-weather ally and is committed to the rule of law, individual freedom, and democracy.

Carney welcomed the EU's proposal for Canada to become an "associated member," emphasizing that both Europe and Canada are strong nations, but stronger together. He clarified that the EU's intentions are not to become a rival power, but to foster better relations and collective resilience. Carney's speech to European lawmakers occurred as Canada and the US grapple with a strained relationship, with trade tensions high following the US's withdrawal from a deal negotiated by Carney and President Donald Trump.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also expressed the EU's interest in Canada as its first-ever associate member, following reports that Carney was considering the proposal. During her State of the EU address, von der Leyen acknowledged the need for the bloc to adapt to an "openly hostile world" marked by aggressive power politics and frayed relationships, highlighting the strained ties between Brussels and Washington under Trump's administration.

Prior to his visit, Carney had expressed his desire to establish a unique alliance between Canada and the EU, noting their shared values, priorities, and complementary strengths. In response to the EU's plans, US President Trump criticized the proposal, threatening tariffs and suggesting the possibility of annexing Canada as its 51st state. The growing rift has also led to the renaming of Lake Ontario to "Lake America" by Trump.
