British-Ghanaian rapper and producer Sway Dasafo dies at 44

British-Ghanaian rapper and producer Sway Dasafo has passed away at the age of 44. The cause of death remains undisclosed. Sway, born Derek Andrew Safo in 1982 to Ghanaian parents in North London, gained recognition in the mid-2000s as a key figure in the rise of UK hip-hop. In 2005, he made history by winning Best Hip-Hop Act at the MOBO Awards, defeating renowned artists such as 50 Cent and The Game.

Sway's breakthrough hit, "Little Derek," released in 2006, highlighted his unique lyrical style and distinctive sound. He received a Mercury Prize nomination and established his own production company while promoting independent music. Sway consistently honored his Ghanaian roots with songs like "Black Stars," celebrating notable Ghanaians living in the diaspora, and collaborations with Ghanaian artists such as "Lay Away" featuring Sarkodie and Jayso, which appeared on Sarkodie's 2009 album, Makye.

His death has sparked an outpouring of tributes from fans, musicians, and colleagues, who remembered him as a trailblazer who paved the way for UK rap and Ghanaian-British artists. The MOBO Awards honored Sway for his impact on UK music. Friends and associates also shared memories of his recent health challenges, while tributes highlighted his independent mixtapes, international collaborations, and production work. Surviving Sway are his two sons and two daughters.
