Boehly steps down as Chelsea chairman

Todd Boehly has resigned as chairman of Chelsea following the sale of his stake in the club to majority owner Clearlake Capital, which now holds full control. Boehly, along with director Mark Walter, sold their shares in a deal that grants Clearlake complete ownership of the club. Boehly, Walter, and Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss each originally held a 12.8% stake, while Clearlake had a 61.5% stake.

Clearlake, led by co-founders Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano, paid around £1 billion for the stakes, representing about a quarter of the club. The club remains valued at approximately £5 billion. Boehly has served as chairman since 2022, when the consortium purchased Chelsea for £2.3 billion from Roman Abramovich due to UK government sanctions.

He will step down as part of the transaction. In a statement on Thursday, Boehly expressed gratitude to the club, its staff, and supporters, stating that he believes Chelsea is well-positioned for continued success under Clearlake's leadership. Clearlake thanked Boehly for his time and contribution and affirmed their commitment to investing in the club's infrastructure, sporting performance, player development, and long-term success.

A club statement confirmed that there will be no changes to day-to-day operations, leadership, or strategy following the deal.
