Bhopal, Indore Medical Colleges Lead MRU Research As Gwalior, Jabalpur, Rewa Lag Behind

In the Madhya Pradesh region, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College in Jabalpur, Gajra Raja Medical College in Gwalior, and Rewa Medical College have been deemed as average performers in the Multidisciplinary Research Units (MRUs). This is primarily due to inadequate healthcare infrastructure, inadequate administrative compliance, and a lack of research output. Despite these challenges, Gandhi Medical College in Bhopal and Mahatma Gandhi Medical College in Indore have emerged as the top performers.

The MRUs were established in government medical colleges to enhance the research environment, address infrastructure gaps that hinder health research, and improve overall population health through evidence-based diagnostic procedures. Performance is evaluated based on the number of projects undertaken, collaborations with other technical institutes, allocation of funds by the central government and its utilization for these projects, and the presentation of research findings, according to GMC doctors.

Collaboration with other institutions is considered crucial for achieving better results, as stated by GMC doctors. The MRU units are currently operating in seven medical colleges across Madhya Pradesh, including the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). These include Gandhi Medical College, Mahatma Gandhi Medical College, Gajra Raja Medical College, Rewa Medical College, and NSCB Medical College.

Rewa Medical College is focusing on sickle cell trait screening, pediatric disorders, and mental health research. NSCB Medical College is concentrating on sickle cell disease, stem cell therapy, and bone marrow research. Gandhi Medical College in Bhopal is working on stem cell therapy, advanced cancer research, and lifestyle diseases.

Gwalior Medical College has set its sights on pediatric oncology, bone marrow transplant research, and non-communicable genotyping, while Indore Medical College aims to develop diagnostics for non-communicable diseases.

Dr. Akash Soni, a spokesman for the Federation of Medical Association, emphasized that the research focus of each medical college is determined by regional requirements. This approach enables them to identify the root cause of diseases prevalent in their specific regions. MGM Medical College in Indore and Gandhi Medical College in Bhopal have received top rankings in this regard, while Gajra Raja Medical College in Gwalior, Rewa Medical College, and NSCB Medical College in Jabalpur have been categorized as average active. The performance of BMC (Bhopal Medical College), Sagar, has been deemed unsatisfactory.
