Ashley Sanchez eyes an NWSL record in a career season with North Carolina

Ashley Sanchez entered the 2024 season with a specific target in mind: 19 goals. However, her goal tally has since surpassed that initial expectation, with Sanchez now within one goal of breaking the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) single-season scoring record for an American player. Sanchez, playing for the North Carolina Courage, has set her sights on another milestone: a 20-goal season.

The path to this record has been a remarkable journey for the 27-year-old. Her first goal of the season came easily, but Sanchez's scoring spree has continued, with 19 goals and counting. Her most recent goal, a curling strike into the top right corner of the net in the 82nd minute against the San Diego Wave on Saturday, brought her within reach of the NWSL's all-time single-season scoring record, which was previously held by Temwa Chawinga in 2024.

Sanchez's scoring ability has come unexpectedly for many, given her previous modest goal tally. Last season, she scored just two goals, and the previous year saw her scoring only five. However, this season has seen Sanchez score an impressive six goals in a single match against the Chicago Stars, earning her the third NWSL Player of the Week honor of the season.

The Courage coach, Mak Lind, attributes Sanchez's scoring prowess to her natural abilities. "She has herself to thank," Lind said. "The only thing I’ve been doing, together with the coaching side, is to make sure she understands her potential." Sanchez herself acknowledges the hard work and dedication required to reach this level, but she also emphasizes the importance of enjoying the process.

"I’ve just been really enjoying this season," Sanchez said, "and I feel like I’m showing the joy that I’m having with the things that I’ve been able to do on the field."

Sanchez's success has not gone unnoticed by opponents, with one San Diego Wave commentator noting her potential as "Silent Sanchez," suggesting her ability to avoid detection even in high-pressure situations. Despite the increased attention, Sanchez remains humble and focused on her goals. Her fiancé, former professional soccer player Tommy Williamson, recognized Sanchez's potential as a winger, and their dedicated training sessions have helped her hone her skills in this position.

Off the field, Sanchez has found a healthy balance by adopting a more structured routine. The addition of a second dog, Benny, has encouraged her to take daily walks in the park, providing an outlet for stress and a way to stay grounded amidst the demands of her professional career. Sanchez acknowledges the demanding nature of her job, but she remains committed to her goals and the joy they bring.
