Ariana Grande Shares Studio Footage From ‘The Day Petal Was Born’: See How the Song Took Root

Ariana Grande's hit song "Petal" didn't emerge suddenly. A recently shared video showcases the pop star working in the studio with producers Max Martin and Ilya Salmanzadeh, illustrating the meticulous process they underwent to grow the track from the ground up. The clip, released on September 17, begins with Grande lounging on a couch in the studio, donning a pale pink knit head wrap.

Martin, sitting next to her with a guitar, is joined by Salmanzadeh, who operates the computer on the other side of the room. After listening to a take where Grande mumbles words experimenting with vocal melodies and rhythms over the instrumental track, Martin exclaims, "Sick!" Grande and Martin both agree, with Grande adding, "I like those notes."

Captioning the video, "The day Petal was born," the Grammy winner acknowledges the song's origin. Later, Grande would expand on the established melodies with completed lyrics, transforming the track into the title of her eighth studio album, "petal." The album debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 in August, featuring the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit "Hate That I Made You Love Me."

Grande was in the midst of her "Eternal Sunshine Tour" when "petal" was released. Prior to and after its debut, she integrated songs from the full-length into the tour's setlist, recording live versions that were later compiled into a live album after the tour concluded in September. Following the tour, she entered a period of downtime, announced ahead of its end, though she intends to meet her press obligations for "Focker-in-Law," as confirmed by Billboard.
