Apple iOS 27 is draining iPhone batteries faster, but it should be temporary

Apple's latest iOS 27 update has led some iPhone users to observe a quicker drain of their device's battery, but experts suggest this issue is likely temporary. After the update is installed, the iPhone continues to perform background tasks, which can cause a noticeable decrease in battery performance. This is due to the phone rebuilding search indexes, refreshing apps, downloading system assets, and preparing data for AI features like Siri.

These activities consume power, making the device feel warmer than usual, even when the screen is off. The extra battery use is most evident in the first 24 to 48 hours following the update, with some phones experiencing it for up to three days. Devices with extensive photo libraries or significant data tied to Siri and AI features may take longer to process the update's requirements.

Apple reassures users that this post-update activity does not damage the battery, and normal battery life should return once the processing is finished. In some cases, the update may impose a heavier initial load on certain devices because iOS 27 introduces new AI features and analytics. This necessitates the phone to organize and process more information than it did after previous updates.

The work may occur incrementally as the iPhone is idle, connected to Wi-Fi, or charging, processing locally stored content and updating information used across its services. This can lead to inconsistent battery drain from one day to the next during the first several days after installation. To help mitigate the issue, users can leave their iPhone plugged in overnight with Wi-Fi enabled, allowing the device to finish its background tasks while charging.
