Anthropic Brings Parallel Coding Workflows to Claude Projects

Anthropic has revamped Claude Projects to enable simultaneous coding sessions, launching the beta for Claude Code users first. This new version allows developers to split a project into individual threads, assigning them to separate Claude Code cloud sessions while monitoring their progress within a single project. The beta is available to select Claude Pro and Max subscribers using Claude Code cloud sessions, with wider access expected within the next week. Other Claude and Team and Enterprise plans will follow suit soon.

Anthropic clarifies that this redesign is an updated version of the existing Projects feature, not a separate Claude Code product, as the name might suggest. The redesign is being introduced within Claude Code, while current Projects in chat and Cowork will continue functioning temporarily and will be updated as the rollout progresses.

Each thread for repository-based tasks operates as an independent Claude Code cloud session, complete with its own branch and copy of the repository. This allows multiple aspects of a development project to progress without one session's changes overwriting another's.

Developers can oversee the work from the main project conversation or examine an individual thread to track its progress and modify it if necessary. These sessions can execute code changes, perform tests, and initiate pull requests. Threads can also leverage Claude Code's existing subagents and other workflows for more intricate tasks.

However, Anthropic cautions that the usual challenges of coordinating parallel development still persist. In the event of conflicting changes from multiple sessions, developers will still need to address any merge conflicts.

The update promises to simplify task division and management for developers. For instance, separate threads could concurrently profile different application endpoints or coordinate modifications across API, web, and mobile repositories during a migration. The redesign also incorporates shared memory across threads, enabling parallel sessions to operate from the same context.

New threads can incorporate decisions and information from previous work, and a project library stores any uploaded files and artifacts created by Claude. Developers can also customize the environment, connectors, plugins, instructions, and model utilized across the Project.

While this new feature aligns with how Anthropic has observed Claude Code usage evolving—recently finding that users tend to delegate more execution to Claude—running several sessions concurrently has its drawbacks. Anthropic notes that Projects may consume usage allowances more rapidly since each thread is a complete Claude Code session. Currently, threads operate in the cloud, but Anthropic plans to introduce support for running them locally alongside developers' tools and code in the future.
