AMA sets record straight on 24-Hour Market project

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has refuted allegations that it is proceeding with the 24-Hour Market project at Agbogbloshie without proper consultation of affected traders and stakeholders. The Assembly has been actively engaging traditional authorities, market leaders, traders and residents in the project area for over three months to discuss the proposed redevelopment and its potential effects on businesses and livelihoods.

The AMA stated that these consultations have covered crucial aspects of the project, including design, land requirements, movement of traders, and measures to minimize disruption to existing businesses. Important discussions were held with the Ga Mantse and Ga Traditional Council, traders at Agbogbloshie, and the leadership of the Agbogbloshie Yam Market.

The project requires approximately four acres of land, with around 3.2 acres already identified. This includes three plots totaling about 0.48 acres within the existing Yam Market area. The AMA clarified that including part of the Yam Market has been discussed with its leadership and emphasized that the project's objective is not to arbitrarily displace traders.

Following the consultations, a one-month notice was served on traders and occupants living in the project areas, ending on August 31, 2026. The Assembly also revealed that stakeholder representatives received transportation allowances of at least GH¢3,000 per meeting during the consultation process. The AMA reiterated that discussions with affected traders, traditional authorities, and other stakeholders will continue before the commencement of main construction works.

The Assembly appealed to the public to trust official information from the Assembly instead of unverified claims about the project.
