Notable figures such as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang may participate in the private AI discussion, and there is also a possibility of other AI CEOs attending. House Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed that discussions between AI company executives and the Trump administration are underway, though the specific date has not been determined.

The meeting is expected to take place next week, and Xi Jinping's visit to Washington does not align with it, according to Johnson. The expectation is that the United States and China could establish common standards for managing AI risks during the meeting. Sam Altman suggested in a recent interview that if the two countries agree on joint standards and test methods for AI technology development, it could lead to the two leaders receiving a Nobel Peace Prize together.

Relations between the U.S. and China have been discussing AI issues in the run-up to the presidential summit. Secretary of the Treasury Scott Beaumont is scheduled to meet Chinese Vice Foreign Minister He in New York this weekend to discuss AI, trade, and rare earths. In a statement to Axios, Beaumont said the U.S. is open to discussing the "common AI risk" and preventing the complete separation of the AI ecosystems of the two countries.

This sentiment is also shared by former U.S. officials who explained during a press briefing about the upcoming U.S.-China presidential summit that while the AI dialogue was initially conceived as part of a broader framework, it has now narrowed down to one of the sub-issues among several.

The confusion surrounding the speed of AI development and the appropriate level of regulation in both countries leaves unclear what specific points the U.S. and China will negotiate.
