AFCON 2027 opening match host still undecided – CAF president

CAF president Dr Patrice Motsepe has announced that the decision on which of Tanzania, Kenya or Uganda will host the opening match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is still pending. The three nations will jointly host the tournament, which is set to take place from June 19 to July 17, 2027. Motsepe disclosed that all three countries have submitted proposals, and CAF is currently evaluating them before arriving at a final decision.

Speaking to the media after a visit to Tanzania, Motsepe expressed confidence in Tanzania’s capacity to host major matches, highlighting the country’s prior experience in organizing continental football events. He also revealed that he personally advocated for Tanzania to host the opening match of the African Football League and the opening ceremony of the African Nations Championship (CHAN), further underscoring his belief in the country’s organizational capabilities.

Motsepe emphasized that his confidence in Tanzania is based on realism. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has assembled a team of 21 experts to work on preparations for AFCON 2027 across the three host nations, focusing on key areas such as stadiums, training facilities, pitches, and other essential infrastructure. The three countries involved in hosting the event are expected to continue collaborating with CAF until a final decision on the opening match venue is reached.
