Abu Dhabi changes hotel classification standards with new guest experience benchmarks

Abu Dhabi has revamped its hotel classification system, unveiling a new framework that emphasizes guest experience, service quality, and sustainability. The updated Abu Dhabi Hotel Classification Manual, introduced at Arabian Travel Market, supersedes the previous system implemented in 2007, with a previous revision in 2018. The new manual broadens classification categories, aligns criteria with international hospitality standards, and strengthens sustainability requirements.

In addition to the redefined classification categories, DCT Abu Dhabi has established seven specialized accolades for hotels excelling in specific areas. These accolades include Emirati Dhiyafa, Green Excellence, and Wellness, alongside Hospitality Innovation. By offering hotels these additional recognition avenues, guests will gain more insight into the unique specialties of each property.

The revised classification system encompasses measurable criteria in service standards, facilities management, health and safety, and sustainability practices. The updated requirements are designed to mirror global hospitality industry changes and align with Abu Dhabi’s Tourism Strategy 2030. The primary goal of the new framework is to provide guests with more consistent hotel experiences, enable hotels to differentiate themselves through specialized classifications, and adjust infrastructure prerequisites for investors.

The transition to the new standards is being managed carefully, with DCT Abu Dhabi leading the rollout through its Licensing and Regulatory Compliance Department. All hotel establishments will receive a grace period to implement the new requirements, although the exact duration has not been disclosed. During this transition, the department will provide support to hotels and ensure consistent application of the revised standards across the emirate.
