A possible return to Houston Astros by injured reliever Steve Okert remains uncertain

Houston Astros reliever Steven Okert (48) was cleared to rejoin the team from the injured list this week, but an exact return date remains unknown. Okert, who has been on the 15-day injured list since September 1 due to a right hamstring strain, has been throwing from flat ground. Manager Joe Espada stated that Okert's hamstring is healing well, but no estimate for his return to pitching from the mound has been provided.

With only ten regular-season games remaining, a potential return for Okert during the season remains uncertain. The Astros are currently tied with the Rangers at the top of the AL West, and a postseason berth would extend the window for Okert to attempt a comeback. Okert is the team's leader in relief appearances this season with 68, posting a 2.13 ERA while serving as a set-up man.

He sustained the hamstring injury while performing warmup activities in the bullpen before a game on August 2. While his current statistics place him ninth in the American League in appearances, Okert's contribution to the team could be crucial in their pursuit of a postseason spot. Meanwhile, Carlos Correa, who had been working towards a return from left ankle tendon surgery, was forced to halt his comeback due to inflammation despite imaging revealing no structural issues.

Correa, a third baseman, had undergone surgery for a torn peroneus brevis tendon in May. As per Espada's announcement on Tuesday, Correa's primary focus moving forward will be to report to spring training fully healthy in 2027.
