2027: Give Tinubu Opportunity To Complete His Reforms, Lalong Tells Nigerians

Former Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong, has urged Nigerians to give President Bola Tinubu the opportunity to complete the economic reforms introduced by his administration. Lalong made this appeal during a speech at a forum of former state legislative leaders. The forum took place amid the economic changes implemented by Tinubu's government since it took office in May 2023.

Tinubu's initial economic move was the removal of the petrol subsidy, announced during his inauguration on May 29, 2023. This decision led to a significant increase in petrol prices and higher transportation and living costs for households and businesses. The administration also introduced major foreign exchange reforms to address distortions in the currency market and improve Nigeria's external position.

The World Bank and International Monetary Fund recognized these steps as vital components of Nigeria's macroeconomic stabilization efforts. However, the reforms have brought about short-term pressures, with household incomes not fully recovering and poverty remaining high. The World Bank has reported improvements in Nigeria's external and fiscal position but noted that inflation and high living costs continue to burden households, particularly poorer Nigerians.

Lalong emphasized the need for continuity to consolidate the changes initiated by the Federal Government. He described the removal of the petrol subsidy as one of the most difficult and consequential economic decisions taken in recent years, highlighting that successive administrations had grappled with the issue due to its impact on the country's finances.

Lalong argued that the subsidy removal, though painful, was necessary as it freed resources that could have been used to sustain consumption. He stressed that the decision's significance should be considered beyond its immediate consequences, urging Nigerians to support efforts to help the public understand the rationale behind the reforms and their long-term benefits.
